The Great Human Odyssey boasts a live symphonic and choral score by Darren Fung, recorded with members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and ProCoro Canada at one of North America’s leading acoustic spaces, Edmonton’s renowned Winspear Opera Hall.

“How many of you are familiar with the company, Anser? I love having this moment. Do you know they are the single largest contractor in the entire COVID terrorism campaign?…
“The companies on the right, that you think are the ones running this show [Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, Merck Ridgeback, Gilead Sciences], are in fact a front [for the companies on the left, Anser, Fors-Marsh, Palantir, Publicis Sapient].
“And you know what a front organization is? They’re the ones that are supposed to take the flack and take the heat. The ones on the left are the ones that actually got the money. Operation Warp Speed went to Anser.
“You didn’t know that, because you were told by the media that it went to Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and all that kind of stuff. That’s not true. The prime contract of Operation Warp Speed went through Anser, a company none of you had heard of!
“And you didn’t hear about them because the contract was signed by ATI, a company based in South Carolina, a company whose history has been government defense contracts for the purposes of propaganda! I wish I made that up. The prime contractor selected to run Operation Warp Speed was a propaganda expert for the US Department of Defense…
“Anser is the way for the Federal Government never to be liable for the criminal conspiracy they know they ran. They are now one of the top ten Federal Contractors in history, below Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon and all those guys.
“Those names you know. You don’t know Anser, the single company that, by COVID rose – the highest-ranked rise in the history of federal contracting; the highest single-year rise, ever was Anser – and none of you know who they are!…
“Anser Corporation, they’re the ones running Operation Warp Speed and they’ve been set up to shield these manufacturers from ever taking the financial liability for their willful misconduct. And one day, everybody’s gonna go, ‘Let’s sue Pfizer! Let’s go sue everybody else! And the only problem is when we go to sue them, they say, ‘Hey! “It gets worse. Fors-Marsh, anybody know Fors-Marsh?…They’re the branding agency that branded COVID. They’re the ones who make sure we find hospitals that are overrun with people. They’re the ones who find kids that died of COVID right before the FDA needs to vote on giving kids injections. “Because they went public in this very bizarre, backdoor way of actually selling founder’s stock into the market, so we got personally-enriched – personally-enriched – using the public market as the laundering facility. Isn’t that brilliant?
“But let’s look at what they did for our COVID scandal. They actually came up with a thing called Gotham Data Tracking…you know what that does? That’s making sure that every time you turn your phone on, when you get off the plane, when you cross the state line, it gives you a little tag that goes, ‘Hey, do you want a COVID alert in your neighborhood?’ You know why? Because you are being monitored. Your phone is being monitored. Your transactions are being monitored, your credit cards are being monitored, your health behavior’s being monitored, your vaccine status is being monitored and it’s all done under the contract run by Gotham Data Sciences, the company that went public during COVID – and none of you knew about this.

THE COVID PIRATES
“Now, why do I call them ‘privateers’? How many are familiar with the difference between a pirate and a privateer? Koyaanisqatsi is a visual concert of images set to the haunting music of Phillip Glass. While there is no plot in the traditional sense, there is a definite scenario. The film opens on ancient native American cave drawings, while the soundtrack chants "Koyaanisqatsi" which is a Hopi Indian term for "life out of balance".
The film uses extensive time lapse photography (which speeds images up) and slow motion photography to make comparisons between different types of physical motion. In one of the first examples, we see cloud formations moving (sped up) inter-cut with a montage of ocean waves (slowed down) and in such a way we are able to see the similarities of movement between these natural forces.
This technique of comparison exists throughout the film, and through it we learn more about the world around us. The film progresses from purely natural environments to nature as affected by man, and finally to man's own man-made environment, devoid of nature yet still following the patterns of natural flow as depicted in the beginning of the film, yet in chaos and disarray. Through this the film conveys its key message, which is Koyaanisqatsi: life out of balance; crazy life; life in turmoil; life disintegrating; a state of life that calls for another way of living.

Dr. David Martin: Not novel, No pandemic, No variants...Campaign of Coercion & Terror!
This is a bombshell video conference between Dr David E Martin and Reiner Fuellmich that should fatally debunk the official COVID narrative, if you send this to everybody you know who still watches cable news.
David makes a tight case, backed by mountainous evidence that COVID-19 wasn’t a lab leak. It is a US bioweapon, as is the so-called vaccine. The primary motive is money.
Everything David says can be used in a court of law and is backed by over 20 years of research, patent filings and FOIA documents, including Anthony Fauci’s recently-released emails. David does not speculate about anything. He doesn’t get into any ulterior motives beyond what he has seen in official or verified documents. What he can definitively prove is that COVID-19 is a financially-motivated scam more than 20 years in the making.
Furthermore, he says “SARS-CoV-2” is not novel. It’s the same old SARS (SARS-CoV-1) bioweapon targeted for human lung epithelium that Anthony Fauci commissioned the University of North Carolina to create and which was patented on April 19th 2002, months before what he calls the “alleged” outbreak in Asia.
David then goes through the CDC’s patent filing for SARS coronavirus on April 25th, 2003, followed three days later by a filing by Sequoia Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of same, in a patent on anti-viral agents of control of infections by coronavirus. Sequoia Pharmaceuticals (subsequently, AB Links Pharmaceuticals) was later rolled-up into the proprietary holdings of Pfizer, Crucell and Johnson & Johnson.
David says this is a RICO case. “And the RICO pattern, which was established in April 2003 for the first coronavirus was played out to exactly the same schedule, when we see SARS-CoV-2 show up, when we have Moderna getting the spike protein sequence by phone from the Vaccine Research Center at NIAID – prior to the definition of the novel subclade. How do you treat a thing before you actually have the thing?”
The goal of all of this has been to institute an aggressive “pan-coronavirus” vaccine schedule for adults, that seeks to replace our natural immune system with synthetic mRNA biology. This goal and the means to achieve it is encapsulated in a statement made by Wuhan Institute Gain-of-Function contractor, Peter Daszak in 2015: “We need to increase public understanding of the need for medical countermeasures, such as a pan-coronavirus vaccine. A key driver is the media and the economics will follow that hype. We need to use that hype to our advantage to get to the real issues. Investors will respond if they see profit at the end of the process.”
David says, “Peter Daszak, the head of EcoHealth Alliance; Peter Daszak, the person who was independently corroborating the Chinese non-lab leak non-theory, because there wasn’t a lab leak. This was an intentional bioweapon of spike proteins, to inject into people, to get them addicted to a pan-coronavirus vaccine. This has nothing to do with a pathogen that was released and every study that’s ever been launched to try to verify a lab leak is a red herring…
“It’s always been all about money. And just to answer a question that was asked slightly earlier, the script for this was written first January 6th, 2004.”
Reiner asks, “January 6th, 2004. Who wrote the script?”
“Merck, at the conference called SARS and Bioterrorism. ‘Bioterrorism and emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobials and immune modulators.’ Merck introduced the notion of what they called the ‘New Normal’, which is the language that became the branded campaign that was adopted by the World Health Organization, the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, which was the board, upon which the Chinese Director of the Centers for Disease Control, Bill Gates’ Dr Elias of the Gates Foundation and Anthony Fauci sat together on that Board of Directors but the first introduction of the New Normal campaign, which was about getting people to accept a universal pan-influenza, pan-coronavirus vaccine was actually adopted January 6th, 2004.”
As to the vaunted Delta and Lambda “variants” that we’ve been hearing about lately, David says, point-blank, “There is no evidence that the Delta Variant is somehow distinct from anything else on GISAID. The fact that we are now looking for a thing doesn’t mean that it is a thing, because we are looking at fragments of things…Because of the way in which we currently sequence genomes, which is actually a compositing process – it’s what we’d call in mathematics, an interleaving – we don’t have any point of reference to actually know whether or not the thing we’re looking at is, in fact distinct from either clinical or even genomic sense…It’s just an alteration and a stop-and-start of what you call the ‘reading frame’. There is no ‘novel’ anything.”
As the head of an organization that monitors all breaches of biological weapons treaty violations, that publishes lists of names and contact information and that identifies who is financing these breaches, David says, “For us, it wasn’t hard to figure out that this was not a public health crisis, this was an opportunistic marketing campaign to address a stated objective. And that’s why this is Occam Razor, it’s the easiest thing to describe, because they’re the ones that said it. The Occam’s Razor reality is that they said they needed to get the public to accept a pan-coronavirus vaccine countermeasure and they needed to the media to create the hype and investors would follow where they see profit.
“You do not have anything else you need to rely on to explain the events of the past 20 months than the actual statement of the actual perpetrator. I don’t do the navel-gazing exercise of going in to try to understand whether there were ‘mommy issues’ behind a bank robber. If they’re holding a bag of money outside of a bank, I actually make the crazy assumption that maybe they’re a bank robber.
“Similarly, if I have somebody who says ‘We need to use the media to hype the medical countermeasure,’ which is actually the injection of a synthetic, recombinant, chimeric protein developed off a computer simulation, if I’m actually going to listen to the motivation for why that might be being done, I will listen to the person doing the simulation, who says, ‘Investors will follow where they see profit.’ I don’t need more explanation.”
4,000 PATENTS PERTAINING TO SARS
David begins by telling Reiner that his team has reviewed the over 4,000 patents pertaining to the SARS coronavirus and done a comprehensive analysis of the financing of all of the manipulations which gave rise to SARS as a subclade of the Beta Coronavirus family.
David’s team took the reported gene sequence of the so-called “novel” coronavirus, as indicated by the ICTV (the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses of the World Health Organization) and compared this gene sequence with those in the patent records as of early 2020 and what they found were over 120 patented pieces of evidence to suggest that the declaration of a novel coronavirus was “entirely a fallacy.”
David says, “There was no novel coronavirus. There are countless very subtle modifications of coronavirus sequences that have been uploaded. But there was no single identified novel coronavirus, at all. As a matter of fact, we found records in the patent records of sequences attributed to novelty going to patents that were sought as early as 1999. So, not only was this not a novel anything…it’s not been novel for over two decades.”
David then takes us on a short journey through the patent landscape.
“The first vaccine ever patented for coronavirus was actually sought by Pfizer…which was specifically this ‘S’ spike protein – so the exact same thing that allegedly we have rushed into invention – the first application was filed on January 28, 2000, twenty-one years ago.
“So the idea that we stumbled on the way to ‘intervene’ on vaccines is not only ludicrous it is incredulous, because Timothy Miller, Sharon Klepfer, Albert Paul Reed and Elaine Jones, on January 28th, 2000 filed what ultimately was issued as US Patent #6372224, which was the spike protein virus vaccine for the canine coronavirus, which is actually one of the multiple forms of coronavirus.
“But as I said, the early work, up until 1999 was largely focused in the area of vaccines for animals. The two animals receiving the most attention were probably Ralph Baric’s work on rabbits and the rabbit cardiomyopathy that was associated with significant problems among rabbit breeders and then, canine coronavirus, in Pfizer’s work to identify how to develop ‘S’ and spike protein vaccine target candidates, giving rise to the obvious evidence that says that neither the coronavirus concept of a vaccine, nor the principle of the coronavirus, itself as a pathogen of interest, with respect to the spike protein’s behavior is anything novel, at all. As a matter of fact, it’s 22 years old, based on patent filings.
“What’s more problematic, actually the most egregious problem is that Anthony Fauci and NIAID found the malleability of coronavirus to be a potential candidate for HIV vaccines.
SARS IS A MAN-MADE BIOWEAPON
“SARS is actually not a natural progression of a zoonotic modification of coronavirus. As a matter of fact, very specifically in 1999, Anthony Fauci funded research at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill specifically to create – and you cannot help but lament what I’m about to read, because this comes directly from a patent application filed on April 19th, 2002…where the NIAID built an infectious, replication-defective coronavirus. It was specifically targeted for human lung epithelium.
“In other words, we made SARS. And we patented it on April 19, 2002, before there was ever any alleged outbreak in Asia, which as you know, followed that by several months.
“That patent was issued as #7279327. That patent clearly lays out, in very specific gene sequencing, the fact that we knew that the ACE receptor, the ACE-2 binding domain, the S1 spike protein and other elements of what we have come to know as this ‘scourge pathogen’ was not only engineered, but could be synthetically modified in the laboratory using nothing more than gene sequencing technologies; taking computer code and turning it into a pathogen or an intermediate of the pathogen.
“And that technology was funded exclusively, in the early days as a means by which we could actually harness coronavirus as a vector to distribute HIV vaccine…
“So it gets worse. My organization was asked to monitor biological weapons treaty violations in the very early days of 2000. You’ll remember the anthrax events in September of 2001. And we were part of an investigation that gave rise to the Congressional inquiry into not only the anthrax origins but also what was unusual behavior around Bayer’s Ciprofloxacin drug, which was a drug used as a potential treatment for anthrax poisoning. And throughout the fall of 2001, we began monitoring an enormous number of bacterial and viral pathogens that were being patented through NIH, NIAID, USAMERIID, the USArmed Forces Infectious Diseases program and a number of agencies internationally that collaborated with them.
“And our concern was that coronavirus was being seen not only as a potential manipulatable agent for potential use as a vaccine vector, but it was also very clearly being considered as a biological weapon candidate. And so our first public reporting on this took place prior to the SARS outbreak in 2001, so you can imagine how disappointed I am, to be sitting here 20 years later, having 20 years earlier pointed out there was a problem looming on the horizon with respect to coronavirus.
“But after the alleged outbreak. And I will always say, ‘alleged outbreak’, because I think it’s important for us to understand that coronavirus, as a circulating pathogen inside the viral model we have is actually not new to the human condition and it is not new to the last two decades, it’s actually been part of the sequence of proteins that circulates for quite a long time.
“But the alleged outbreak that took place in China in 2002, going into 2003 gave rise to a very problematic April 2003 filing by the United States Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. And this topic is of critical importance to get the nuance very precise. Because, in addition to filing the entire gene sequence on what became SARS coronavirus – which is actually a violation of 35 US Code Section 101 – you cannot patent a naturally-occurring substance, the 35 US Code Section 101 violation was Patent #7220852. Now, that patent also had a series of derivative patents associated with it. These are patent applications that were broken apart, because they were of multiple, patentable subject matter.
“These include, US Patent #46592703P, which is actually a very interesting designation, US Patent #776521. These patents not only covered the gene sequence of SARS coronavirus, but also covered the means of detecting it, using RTPCR.
“Now, the reason why that’s a problem is if you actually both own the patent on the gene, itself and you own the patent on its detection, you have a cunning advantage to being able to control 100% of the provenance of not only the virus, itself but also its detection, meaning you have entire scientific and message control.
“And this patent, sought by the CDC, was allegedly justified by their public relations team as being sought so that ‘everyone would be free to be able to research coronavirus’. The only problem with that statement is it’s a lie. And the reason why it’s a lie is because the Patent Office not once but twice rejected the patent on the gene sequence as ‘unpatentable’, because the gene sequence was already in the Public Domain.
“In other words, prior to CDC’s filing for a patent, the Patent Office found 99.9% identity with the already-existing coronavirus recorded in the Public Domain and over the rejection of the Patent Examiner, and after having to pay an appeal fine in 2006 and 2007, the CDC overrode the Patent Office’s rejection of their patent and ultimately, in 2007, got the patent on SARS coronavirus.
“So every public statement that CDC has made, that said this was in the public interest is falsifiable by their own paid bribe to the Patent Office. This is not something that’s subtle. And to make matters worse, they paid an additional fee to keep their application private. Last time I checked, if you’re trying to make information available for the public research, you would not pay a fee to keep the information private.

Werner Herzog, Documentary, Timothy Treadwell, Alaska, Tragedy, Tragicomedy, Home Video, Nature
Tragicomedy is an overworked word. Yet nothing else will do. Werner Herzog, that connoisseur of extreme figures in far-off places, has made an inspired documentary about the gonzo naturalist Timothy Treadwell, who in 2003 ended up as lunch for the bears he lived with in the remote Alaskan wilderness.
It is poignant, it is beautiful, and it is absolutely hilarious. Herzog didn't even have much work to do, what's more, because Treadwell - gifted, untrained film-maker that he was - had done almost everything himself, leaving behind hundreds of hours of videotape that he had shot at extreme and indeed fatal risk to himself. They contain sublime, dramatic shots of the bears and footage of his own mad and posturing rants to camera, wearing combats and a bandana - part surfer-dude, part drama-queen. Poor Mr Treadwell. He loved those bears. And they loved him. Yum, yum!
Timothy Treadwell was a mixed-up kid from Long Island in the US who wanted to be an actor. He auditioned for Cheers, but the shock and disappointment of coming second to Woody Harrelson sent him over the edge into drink and drug crises. He came out the other side clean and sober, but with a new passion: the grizzly bears of Alaska. Every summer, he went camping out there with his video camera and his attitude problem, regularly breaking the US park rangers' rule not to come within 100 yards of a bear. Timothy got up close and personal, giving them cute names like "Mr Chocolate" and "Sgt Brown", patting them on the nose, and becoming obsessed with gaining the bears' respect for his courage in doing so. His opening rant to camera is a comic classic, influenced, I very much suspect, by Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now: "I am a kind warrior! I will not die at their claws and paws! I will be a master!"
Bizarrely, his macho extreme-sports persona often alternates with something screamingly camp. Treadwell yoo-hoos wildly like Robin Williams at the bears who lope up to him: "Oh hi! Hiya! Oh he's a big bear! He's a surly bear!" And Treadwell is often very funny - a reality TV natural who never got his own show. There are too many choice moments to describe here, but among the classics is his sudden zooming-in on an immobile bumble bee on a flower, which he tearfully describes: "Isn't this so sad? A bumble-bee expired while it was doing the pollen thing. It's beautiful . . . it's sad . . . it's tragic . . . it's . . . WAIT! The bee just MOVED! Is it . . . is it just SLEEPING?" Later, Treadwell films a full-on macho-bear fight between Micky and Sgt Brown over a female called Saturn, whom Treadwell describes as the "Michelle Pfeiffer of bears".
His mission was to teach the world about these animals, and this he certainly did, according to his lights, touring schools and giving illustrated talks to kids without accepting a fee. But he also angrily claimed, in some of his looniest soliloquies, that he was "protecting" the bears from poachers or even the federal authorities. The awful truth was that he did not add anything to our knowledge of bears, and that any supposed danger these animals were in, living as they did in a protected national park, existed only in Treadwell's over-heated, self-dramatising imagination.
Treadwell's over-the-top persona is in contrast to the cool, deadpan drone of Herzog himself, who pays tribute to his intuitive skills as a film-maker, but repudiates Treadwell's Disneyfied view of nature, seeing in it only colossal coldness and indifference. Herzog appears on camera just once, listening through headphones to Treadwell's final screams - and those of his luckless girlfriend - as they are both eaten. It is only audio, as Treadwell was attacked before he could remove the lens-cap; in a masterstroke of restraint, Herzog does not let us hear this sound, and sorrowfully advises Treadwell's former girlfriend, Jewel, to burn the tape. I wonder if she has.
Was Timothy Treadwell an inspired radical operating outside the academic naturalist establishment - or a pain in the neck with personal issues? A little of both, of course. He was certainly a brilliant performer and director who, by crossing the taboo line (by as it were impaling himself on the taboo line's barbed wire) vividly demonstrated the alien-ness of nature, and therefore its strange and terrible beauty, more than anything I've ever seen by David Attenborough. It is a superb documentary, because Treadwell has not been coerced or set up; he was enough of an amateur to be relaxed and unselfconscious, yet enough of a professional to generate all this outstanding footage, and quite rightly Herzog declines to patronise or make fun of him. If we didn't already know Timothy Treadwell's awful fate, it would be enough to say: a star is born.

I must admit that I originally thought the premise for this film was ridiculous. Two hours later, I found myself staring blankly at the end credits. My phone rang unanswered. I lit my first cigarette for 20 years and realised that some kind of Alien Invasion is happening. Colonel Philip Corso was right. They’re Here!”

A documentary follows the Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja as he tries to add cultural depth to the sport’s highs.
As the mountaineering genre continues its ascent into the mainstream, there’s a thesis awaiting a graduate student about male climbers and their mothers, wives or partners. Touched on in the Oscar winner “Free Solo” and summer’s “The Alpinist,” those relationships get screen time in “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible,” about the Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja, known as Nimsdai, and his attempt to summit the world’s 14 highest peaks in seven months. (The previous record was seven years.)
While his wife, Suchi Purja, charmingly attempts to explain her husband’s embrace of risk to civilians, it’s his ailing mother who underscores more tender lessons about her son’s drive but also about the mortality we all face.
As a young man, Purja enlisted in his country’s legendary armed forces, the Gurkhas, and later joined the United Kingdom Special Forces. He seized on the climbing endeavor, which he called “Project Possible,” as a way to highlight the contributions of Nepalese mountaineers, who are more than the Sherpas to Western expeditions.
Early on, the project’s four other climbers — Mingma David Sherpa, Geljen Sherpa, Lakpa Dendi Sherpa and Gesman Tamang — get introduced as vital characters. They are as devoted to Purja’s seemingly mad mission as he is.
Much of the documentary’s climbing footage was taken by Purja and his team. The director Torquil Jones uses those images, as well as fresh interviews (the alpine legend Reinhold Messner waxing beautifully existential) and some vivid animation to craft a documentary exploring themes of generosity, danger, drive and national character.
In widening its aperture — from the ascents to visits to Purja’s childhood home as well as brief dives into Nepal’s history — “14 Peaks” expands a genre often focused on the feats of individuals to celebrate lessons about vast dreams and communal bonds.

Man on Wire tells the story of how Philippe Petit planned and carried out what has been called the greatest artistic crime of the 20th century. On 7 August 1974, Petit strung a 60-metre tightrope wire 450 metres above the ground between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre and walked across it, nine times.
Through interviews and re-enactments, the movie depicts the relationships between Philippe and his then girl friend Annie Allix, close friend Jean-Louise Blondeau and co-conspirators David Forman, Barry Greenhouse, Jim Moore and Alan Welner. The movie shows archival footage of Philippe walking between the spires of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and between the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Philippe and his co-conspirators describe how they spied for weeks on the Twin Towers, tricked their way in using fake ID cards and hauled nearly one ton of equipment to the top floor.
The movie contains no live footage of the walk or re-enactment of it. Instead, the event is represented through still images and commentary by Philippe and the team members. Following the walk Philippe is arrested, taken for psychiatric evaluation and then released. The media hail Philippe a hero. We hear accounts from eyewitnesses telling how watching Philippe walk the wire was a once-in-a-lifetime gift. The movie ends with the main characters discussing how both the event itself and the resulting fame caused the breakdown of friendships and relationships.
The Light Bulb Conspiracy uncovers how planned obsolescence has shaped our lives and economy since the 1920’s, when manufacturers deliberately started shortening the life of consumer products to increase demand. The film also profiles a new generation of consumers, designers and business people who have started challenging planned obsolescence as an unsustainable economic driver.
The documentary begins by visiting the longest running light bulb in the world, which has burned continuously for over 110 years in Livermore, California. Initially, light bulbs were built to last. But the film finds historical evidence revealing how a cartel in the 1920’s decided to produce bulbs limited to a maximum life of 1000 hours, making the humble light bulb one of the first examples of planned obsolescence and a model for increasing profits on other products.
Shot over three years in Europe, the U.S. and Ghana, The Light Bulb Conspiracy investigates the evolution and impact of planned obsolescence through interviews with historians, economists, designers and manufacturers, along with archival footage and internal company documents. The film profiles several well-known historical advocates -- Bernard London, who famously proposed ending the Great Depression by mandating planned obsolescence, and Brook Stevens, whose post-war ideas became the gospel of the 1950’s and helped shape the throwaway consumer society of today.
The Light Bulb Conspiracy also looks at modern examples of planned obsolescence, including computer printers and the controversy over the inability to replace iPod batteries. Environmental consequences are seen most dramatically in the massive amounts of electronic waste that end up in uncontrolled dump sites in Third World countries such as Ghana. The film concludes with examples of consumers and businesses moving towards more sustainable practices and products, including Warner Philips, great grandson of the founder of Philips Electronics, who is producing an LED bulb designed to last 25 years.

For most of the naysayers, it wasn't so much the actual music that got their collective goat as it was the way the band portrayed themselves.
“This is a song Charles Manson stole from The Beatles. We’re stealing it back.”
Those were the first words uttered by Bono in the 1988 U2 rockumentary Rattle and Hum before the band ignited a sold-out McNichols Sports Arena in Denver with a rendition of “Helter Skelter” so electric Manson himself might’ve felt its vibes through the walls of San Quentin. Thirty years later, Manson is dirt in the ground and “Helter Skelter” is 12 minutes long on the 50th anniversary edition of The White Album coming out this November. Yet the critical disdain for both the Rattle and Hum film and its chart-topping soundtrack remains the same as it ever was. Upon the release of the Jimmy Iovine-produced album (Oct. 10) and the film (Oct. 27), Rattle and Hum was met with largely complacent and downright hostile reviews.
“By almost any rock & roll fan’s standards, U2’s Rattle and Hum is an awful record,” wrote Tom Carson in The Village Voice. “But the chasm between what it thinks it is and the half-baked overweening reality doesn’t sound attributable to pretension so much as monumental know-nothingness.”
In The New York Times, Jon Pareles accused the band of trying to “grab every mantle in the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame” before scowling “what comes across in song after song is sincere egomania.”
“This is a mess with a mission,” wrote David Fricke in his year-end review of Rattle in the Dec. 15-29, 1988, issue of Rolling Stone. “But a mess nevertheless.”
For most of the naysayers, it wasn’t so much the actual music that got their collective goat as it was the way the band portrayed themselves to filmmaker Phil Joanou, who was only 26 when he directed Rattle and Hum (it was his second feature film behind the 1987 high school black comedy Three O’Clock High). At its root, it’s a highly stylized concert film culled from U2’s blockbuster tour in support of their breakthrough fifth LP The Joshua Tree — the album that catapulted Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. into a new stratosphere of superstardom. In between performances, however, were scenes of the group traversing through American cities crucial to the fabric of rock n’ roll’s history.
They went to San Francisco to play the “Save the Yuppies” concert in Justin Herman Plaza, where they dazzled the impromptu crowd with a version of “All Along the Watchtower” which served as the perfect middle ground between Bob Dylan‘s original and Jimi’s fiery takeover of the song. They visited Harlem, where they cut a gospel version of their Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” with the New Voices of Freedom choir and caught the renowned street blues duo Satan and Adam busking on 125th St. They headed down to Memphis to visit Graceland and cut some songs at Sun Studio, including “Angel of Harlem” featuring the legendary Memphis Horns and references to Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, and “Love Rescue Me,” a co-write with Bob Dylan which, along with the Daniel Lanois-produced Oh Mercy, helped many U2 fans get hip with Zimmerman. They also recorded “When Love Comes to Town” at Sun, a song that helped many young U2 fans find their way to the catalog of the song’s soulful co-captain B.B. King and such blues classics as Live at the Regal and Indianola, Mississippi Seeds.
These were the scenes that drew the ire of music critics, who were unfairly convinced that U2’s motives came from somewhere other than honest admiration and appreciation. But for a 14-year-old in 1988 in the first weeks of his freshman year of high school, Rattle and Hum — both the film and its soundtrack — proved to be an eye-opening introduction to music beyond my narrow scope of MTV and rock radio at the time. It was the first time I ever heard about A Love Supreme or experienced the string arrangements of Van Dyke Parks, who along with Benmont Tench on pump organ, provided the sweep of heartbreak that imbues the album and film’s closing number “All I Want Is You,” still very much considered U2’s greatest ballad. I never truly, honestly felt the shimmy of the Bo Diddley beat before I listened to “Desire,” a song that earns the distinct honor of being the first single to simultaneously top the mainstream and modern rock Billboard charts (and scored the group a Grammy in 1989). “God Part II” gave me a deeper appreciation for the solo work of John Lennon, particularly Plastic Ono Band, whose key track “God” U2 were responding to as Bono defends John and Yoko by taking a shot at controversial biographer Albert Goldman with the line — “I don’t believe in Goldman, his type like a curse/Instant karma’s gonna get him, if I don’t get him first.” The atmospheric beauty of “Heartland” — featuring Brian Eno on keyboards — was a perfect gateway to the more esoteric moments on The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree, especially for someone who went into the Rattle and Hum experience as something of a U2 skeptic.
